Week 11 NFL Picks-Green Bay Remains Undefeated

Winning in football is sometimes literally a matter of inches. This statement had verification in the Saints verses Falcons with the Falcons losing 26-23. San Diego got Bush-wacked and Palmer-ized by Oakland Thursday night. Pittsburgh gained control of the AFC North beating Cincinnati, while Baltimore sputtered against lowly Seattle. The Jets inability to put it in the end zone cost them against New England. Chicago topped Detroit and Green Bay had their way with Minnesota.

November 13, 2011, Atlanta verses New Orleans, a date which will live in infamy. The game was forced into overtime and Atlanta won the coin toss. Momentum appeared to be on the side of Atlanta. Mike Cox took the third down pass from Ryan. The oustretched arm of Cox in real time looked to have gotten the first down, but the replay showed he had bobbled the ball just before his arm crossed the stick. The Falcons now were faced with a drive ending fourth down. The obvious decision would be to punt, a no brainer, but the obvious was not today.

All eyes were on Mike Smith. A glaring fact: Go for it and fail, it would be a chip shot for New Orleans to win. If you are a gambler it could be likened to a moment you're standing at the Roulette Wheel with a wade of money in your hand and you pause to reflect, should I or shouldn't I. A decision that would have one of two outcomes. If you succeed, you will be celebrated with confetti showering down and corks popping. If you don't, it won't be confetti showering down, but a hail of disappointment and that was really stupid.

The offense got the green light and it was over at the snap of the ball. Turner couldn't get any momentum with his offensive line pushed back in his face and the Saints swarming to the ball. New Orleans took over, end of game, end of story.

It was the game to take control of AFC East because Buffalo lost to Dallas earlier. The Jets inability to score in the red zone and some stupid mistakes made it easy for the Brady Bunch. If you give Brady a minute of time, he will turn it into a score, and that is what Mark Sanchez did just before the half ended. Fumble a punt and throw an interception, thus turning the ball over to the Brady Bunch is only asking for trouble, and that is what the Jets did. Instead of taking advantage of the rag-tag defense of the Patriots, the Jets offense sat on the sidelines while Tom Brady performed his magic.

The New York Jets play Denver on Thursday night. Stop Tebow from running and it should be a farely easy victory. Is Dallas for real? They play Washington and it could get real nasty for the Redskins. Buffalo will be facing off with a surging Miami. Could go either way. San Diego is jumping from the frying pan into the pot against Chicago. A must win for both teams, especially the Chargers. Cincinnati needs A. J. Green against Baltimore and Baltimore needs to get focused. New England, on a Monday night at Gillette Stadium, mixed with some New England weather, could leave the Chiefs shivering in their feathers. I was 10-6 in Week 10.

It Was A Great Sunday Of NFL Football Games-Maybe The Best In Its History

The Browns are fading fast in the brutal, hotly contended AFC North. In a division where the Brown legacy is written all over it, the Cleveland Browns seem to be comfortable at the bottom year after year. Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns sister team, is riding high on two rookies, and the former Browns, the Baltimore Ravens, are sitting on top. Going into the final stretch of the season there is alot of football left to play between these teams, but after beating the Steelers it appears Baltimore is emerging as the favorite, for now at least. Stay tuned, that could change in a blink of an eye. Sunday's lineup produced a boat load of down to wire thrills.

Baltimore had been leading through most of the game until Mike Wallace came across the field to snag a Ben Roethlisberger pass that was meant for Antonio Brown in the end zone. It surprised Roethlisberger and stole a moment of glory from Brown. You take'em anyway you can get'em. The touchdown put the Steelers up 20-16 with alittle under 5 minutes left. The ball exchanged hands once more and then with 2:17 left on the clock it was Baltimore's possession.

Unflappable Joe Flacco faced the daunting task of taking it down field from his own 8 yard line. He was up to the challenge. The fans of Pittsburgh cringed and watched helplessly as the Ravens marched up the green methodically, but time was favoring the Steelers. Flacco, from Pittsburghs 37, went for it all. Torey Smith was streaking into the end zone wide open. The crowd gasped as the pass was right on target, but Smith had the familiar case of butter fingers, and the crowd cheered in relief.

Flacco's receivers would let him down a second time in the end zone when David Reed dropped a perfectly delivered pass. Flacco shook off the disappointment. He had to. There were only seconds left between him and defeat. The next play Flacco took the snap and set himself, the opportunity presented itself a third time and it was Smith in the right side of the end zone. Did Flacco on seeing Smith, for a brief moment in his mind, hesitate to throw the ball to a receiver who had previously let him down? We will never know. If he did, it went unoticed as the ball landed into the arms of a sliding Smith. Redemption is sweet. Victory is sweet. Baltimore defeated the Steelers for a second time 23-20.

Green Bay and San Diego traded scores throughout three quarters. When the Packers thought they delivered the final blow, San Diego would come storming back. Green Bay scored two touchdowns in the fourth and were comfortably in the lead at 45-24. Philip Rivers and Vincent Jackson hooked up for two quick scores and the Chargers were suddenly back in the game at 45-38. With 1:05 left, the ball was back in the hands of Rivers at his own 31. A San Diego score would possibly throw the game into an overtime shootout. A pass to Antonio Gates put it at the 50 yard line. Now the end zone was in view and within Rivers reach, but a familiar Rivers nemesis reared its ugly head, the dreaded interception. A pass in the direction of Jackson fell short and it was over.

St Louis and Arizona, two teams with identical losing records faced off in Arizona. The two teams traded field goals for three quarters with the Rams in the lead 9-6. The world proceeded to fall apart for Skelton and the Cardinals. It began to rain safety's, two to be exact. St Louis was now winning 13-6. Arizona would finally tie the game in the fourth on a Skelton pass to Larry Fitzgerald. It wasn't over even though there was 51 seconds left on the clock for the Rams to do something. In football time, 51 seconds is alot, especially when you only need a field goal to win.

St Louis got that chance. From Arizona's 42, the ball left Josh Brown's foot, but we will never know if it would have been good because it was blocked. End of quarter. Now comes OT. It didn't last long, one possession to be exact. Patrick Peterson took a Donnie Jones punt 99 yards for a touchdown, Arizona 19-13 over St Louis. The sad thing about it, Jones had an opportunity to easily stop Peterson, but muffed it.

New England and NY Giants game ended with the Patriots being totally stunned. The NY Jets and Buffalo Bills traded blows with the Jets getting the better of the Bills. It was an exciting day of NFL football, maybe one of the best in its history. The Bears and Eagles are next on Monday Night Football. Will it continue?

Week 8 In The NFL Highlights Some Surprises And Follies

Denver got t-boned by Detroit. Pittsburgh stole the show from New England. Buffalo buffaloed Washington. Cincinnati clawed their way to victory over Seattle. Philadelphia soared over Dallas. Whoopsy San Diego made a late game mistake that cost them a victory. But, the shocker of all shockers was St Louis ramming New Orleans into the wall of shame.

The Rams going into their contest with the Saints were 0-6. The previous Sunday they were pummeled by inconsistent Dallas. Meanwhile. the Saints thoroughly embarrassed Manningless Indianapolis, scoring 62 points. So, what the heck happened to the Saints, who I would not have picked to lose in a million years against the Rams? The answer is quite obvious, Steve Jackson and a relentless defense. The Ram defense took Drew Brees out of his usual rhythm. While on the otherside of the ball, Jackson ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns. The rest of the NFL teams, take note.

Detroit rebounded in a big way. They needed to reaffirm their legitimacy. Sure, it was just Denver, but a win is a win. Matthew Stafford had a career day. He threw three touchdowns on a total of 267 yards with a rating of 130.8. Tim Whoop-tee-do Tebow didn't have a bad day, running for 63 yards and throwing for 172 yards and one touchdown. His one huge blunder was a pick that went for a hundred yards and a touchdown. Tebow runs out of necessity because he gets easily flustered and can't find the open man. Running quarterbacks just don't go to the Super Bowl.

Buffalo is one of the surprises of the year. They are staying on pace with New England. One of the reasons, Fred Jackson is having a great year. He didn't score a touchdown in this one, but he accumulated a total of 194 yards of offense. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdowns to Scott Chandler. Buffalo faces a tough, opportunistic Jet defense that raise havoc a a quarterback. Jackson will be their ticket to victory.

Their were alot of borderline penalty calls that went against the hard luck Chargers in the Monday Night Follies. It was raining yellow flags from the beginning to the end. Game altering official calls that took scores away from the Chargers. That been said, San Diego shot themselves in the foot on numerous occassions. They could only get the ball across the goal line once. All the other times they entered the red zone, penalties and mistakes forced them back. Kansas City didn't fair much better, but came away with the win on an overtime field goal. The Chargers are looking eerily like the Browns of old.

Pittsburgh handled the Brady Bunch quite nicely. New England fought right down to the final seconds of the game when their final possession ended up sailing in the wrong direction and out the back of the end zone, courtesy Polamalu, after a Brady fumble. The result was a safety. The offense can't advance the ball on a fumble, but there is nothing ruling against the ball going backwards 25 yards after being slapped. Roethlisberger and Company controlled the ball twice as long as the Brady Bunch. Ouch. Now Pittsburgh faces a gauntlet of AFC North teams in the back stretch. Though, I don't think they need to worry too much about the touchdownless Browns. Unless, the Browns coaching staff gets their heads out of their keisters about the wide receiver dilemma. And that's another story.

Some Stunners On Sunday And A Monday Night Game To Go

The question whether Detroit would remain undefeated was answered with an strong affirmitive. The Steelers game was fury unleashed and the poor Titans were the recipients of that fury. Maybe, Rothlisberger should play with a special shoe all the time. But the big difference for the Steeler offense was the protection of Rothlisberger, giving him an opportunity to pick his targets and pick his targets he did. San Fran pummeled Tampa Bay. New Orleans and Green Bay continued their winning ways. New York Giants were viciously stung by Seattle. I was 8-5 in a topsy-turvy weekend of football.

Will Baltimore remain on top of the AFC North? The Ravens will be taking on a tough opponent from the Lone Star State, Houston Texans, who was bested by Oakland in their past outing. The drought has appeared to have affected the Texans, who look good one week and mistake proned the next. Against a tough Baltimore defense, mistakes can prove to be costly.

This is how I would have begun my picks for Week 6, but an important circumstance arose this past week and I had to make a trip to Ohio, so I didn't get the opportunity to finish my article. Detroit no longer stands on top with Green Bay as the only undefeated teams. They lost to a revived San Fran team, who is making a run for the playoffs. New Orleans was stunned by one of San Fran's previous victims, Tampa Bay. Baltimore remains on top of the AFC North and the Cleveland Browns sunk lower into the abyss. The Brady Bunch mounted an end of the game drive and handed the Cowboys a heart breaking loss. Carolina Panthers still Cam not win a game. The Bills got skinned by the Giants and Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta all won.

There is one game left I can make a pick on. It looks to be a fairly easy pick, considering one of the opponents hasn't won a game yet this year, Miami. Their opposition is the New York Jets, who Miami seems to find a way to beat. Not likely this time, not even remotely likely. Miami will have Matt Moore tacking snaps in place of Chad Henne, and Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas just haven't been doing it for the Dolphins. The Jets can be mistake prone at times, but that won't be the case against a weak-on-the-pass Miami defense. Look for Santonio Holmes to have a good game.

Cleveland Browns Had Plenty Of Wasted Offense and Lose To The Titans

If you throw 61 times in a game and only connect for one touchdown, something ain't right. On top of that, if you achieve 25 first downs to your opponenets 13 and lose 31-13, something definitely ain't right. Add to that, time of possession for the Browns was over 36 minutes to the Titans 23 minutes and they could only manage two field goals and one touchdown out of all that offense. It just catagorically ain't right. Unless they come up with a solution, Cleveland is headed into an offensive sinkhole of their own making.

Colt McCoy was chased around all afternoon and managed 350 yards on 40 completions. His longest pass play was 27 yards. Nine of his completions amounted to gains of between 10 to 27 yards. The rest, 31 passes, amounted to gains on an average of 6 total yards. That will not get the job done. McCoy threw passes to just about everybody on the bench. Hillis didn't help the cause either with only 46 yards of rushing. Needless to say, the line definately didn't help the cause either, or maybe, the Titan defense was that good. I'll let you decide that one for yourself.

Matt Hasselbeck, on the other hand, only needed half a game to beat the Browns. Hasselbeck managed three touchdowns out of a total of 10 completions. The Titans did get a good running game out of Chris Johnson. He ran for 101 yards. The Titans only touchdown in the second half was on an 97 yard interception by Jordan Babineaux. The Titan defense was on the field a good portion of the game, but were steady as a rock through it all. They only allowed the Browns to score their one and only touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Browns seriously need a vertical threat. I don't know who is the problem when it comes to this missing feature, Mccoy, the line, the wide receivers, or the coaching staff. Probably alittle of everything, but I am going with the coaching staff. They have to unleash Colt McCoy and take shots down field. They need to make up their minds on Joshua Cribbs and utilize his speed as a wide receiver. If you want a go to guy, you got to throw to that guy. The opposing defenses are showing no fear of the Browns passing attack. Pin the opposing secondary's ears back and strike some terror into them. Do that, and maybe you will be surprised at what may happen. At least the fans will be, surprised that is.

Browns Top Dolphins 17-16 On Two Sensational Catches

It is said, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." After their win against the Dolphins, Colt McCoy summed up their play this way, "We played like garbage for the most part of the day. As ugly as it was, it was a huge win for us." From a statistical point of view, the Browns looked like the Mona Lisa with a bad hair day, but from the vantage point of the fans, it was a beautiful win with some defining moments, one of them associated with Joshua Cribbs. Cribbs didn't return kickoffs or punts because of a groin problem, but on his spectacular leaping touchdown catch he must of had a miraculous recovery.

Colt McCoy was right about one thing, his play was ugly. He went 19-39 with 210 yards. For most of the game, exactly a little over 56 minutes, McCoy's passing looked like a person trying to throw a cracked wiffle ball. It is near impossible and ridiculously inaccurate. That pretty much described his attempts to target Cleveland receivers. Still, he got the job done with alot of help from Cribbs and finally, Massaquoi. Massaquoi hauled in the go ahead touchdown in the final minute of play.

The Browns defense got the job done. They totaled 5 sacks on Henne and 8 other hits. They caused Reggie Bush to fumble twice, one of which they recovered. With Miami on the Cleveland 47 and the game on the line, all Henne needed to do was complete a few passes to put them in field goal range. The Browns defense rose to the occasion and it was an interception by Mike Adams that sealed the victory.

Next Sunday, the Browns will be hosting the high flying Tennessee Titans, who are coming off victories against Baltimore and Denver. Baltimore dismantled Pittsbugh in their first game and took apart St Louis. What does that tell us about Tennessee? The Titans are dangerous. Colt McCoy cannot afford to have a 50 per cent completion rate in this one. Hopefully, Hillis will be back to take some of the pressure off McCoy, who can't handle the blitz very well.

Finally, the answer to the wide receiver issue is a groin pull away. Start using Joshua Cribbs as a wide receiver and he can have more of an impact than just being used as the kick-punt returner. He could be to the Browns offense what Wallace is to the Steelers, a viable long threat.

Week Two-First Victory In The Book For The Browns

Can one person make that much difference in a way a team succeeds? If your name is Peyton Manning, apparently it does. The Browns were able to get on the road of victory after taking advantage of that fact. The Steelers beat up on a what-a-difference-a-year-makes 0-2 Seahawks. The Lions and Bills happily maintain their winning ways. New England, Green Bay, and New Orleans continue to offend or is it, continue to be offensive. There were some blowouts and there were some close ones. All-in-all it was a good weekend of football.

In one recent article by a certain sports website, the Browns were referred to as a "below-average team". Well, the below-average Browns walked away from Indy with a win with the help of Peyton Hillis. Hillis ran for 94 solid yards and two touchdowns. Colt McCoy had just an ok day throwing for 211 yards and one touchdown. The Brown's defense was more alert for this one and it was Reggie Wayne who got caught taking a nap on a third down interception by Usama Young.

On the negative side, the Browns had a serious case of the muffs, but fortunately only lost one of them. The offense is still missing that crucial piece of the puzzle called a premier wide receiver. I am still at a loss as to why Joshua Cribbs is not being used more as a wide receiver. Are they afraid he might get hurt or something?

Going against Miami this weekend, the Browns can prove they are more than just a below-average team. Colt McCoy has an opportunity here to have a greater impact with a Miami defense that is 30th against the pass, but that rating may be slightly deceiving since New England racked up huge passing yardage against them in the first game. No doubt the Browns will also try to test the waters of a weak-on-the-run Miami defense and establish the run game early with Hillis. It is definately a plus the Browns are playing at home on top of it.

All this having been said, Miami will not be a push over after losing their first two games. Chad Henne was superb against New England, but abysmal against Houston. It depends on what Henne will show up.

The Browns Blew Into Philadelphia And Lost To The Eagles 24-14

This game showed the Browns have a ways to go. The offense was a no-show, which brings us to the next glaring observation and an obvious problem.  The Bowns offense is in trouble against a team that knows how to play the West Coast offense. With that having been said, all of this preseason stuff is like watching the Weather Channel predict the track of Hurricane Irene. It changes day by day, hour by hour. At times it is pretty laughable and sometimes pathetic. Nobody knows exactly where it is going, until it goes there.

Colt McCoy threw his first interception of the preseason and couldn't put the ball across the goal line. The Eagle defense kept him out of sinc. The running game wasn't much of a help, but with the preseason nearing an end they were being shuffled in and out like a bad hand of five card stud. At least, Hillis is back into the mix. Now it is up to him as to what impact he may have. No stand out among the wide receivers in this one, except maybe Robiskie. The only two scores came late in the game on passes to Alex Smith and Chris Matthews. Joshua Cribbs was out with an injury and will remain out. That is an ouch.

The Browns may have lost, but the defense didn't look that bad. Two Eagle touchdowns came from quarterback runs and another off a short screen pass. A glaring weakness that needs to be looked at very seriously so future opponents can't exploit it.  The Browns Phil Taylor forced a fumble out of Vick on the Eagles 18 early in the game, but the Browns offense couldn't put the ball in for a score and the field goal attempt was blocked.

Where are the Browns going? The various prediction models show the possible track the Browns may take. It will change month by month, week by week. It may get pretty laughable and sometimes pathetic. You won't know where the Browns are going until they go there. So stay tuned, not to the Weather Channel, which turns people into zombies, and watch the Browns to see where they will go. My prediction, I will let you know.

Colt McCoy Wins And The Browns Lose To The Lions

Don't get concerned or excited, preseason games count as much as your check does before taxes, and it was only a Detroit Lions win after Colt McCoy left the game. There is something to be alittle concerned about and that is the antics of Greg A-Little. He is like a dog that has been left in the house to long and when it finally gets out, goes alittle crazy. Somebody needs to give him a bone to chew on, or maybe, the Browns should consider using him as a back-up punter.

Colt McCoy threw three touchdowns in only half the time on the field. While you might consider that impressive, remember it was only the lowly Detroit Lions they were playing in a preseason game. Still, it looks as if McCoy is fitting into the West Coast style of offense nicely where timing and accuracy are crucial. Where was the long ball threat the Browns badly need? The jury is still in deliberation on this one.

Tightend Evan Moore seemed to get more attention from McCoy in this one with two touchdown receptions. This combination could prove to be a valid threat when the season begins. The other touchdown toss from McCoy was to Greg Little and the little bit I have already wrote about him is sufficient for now. Where was Joshua Cribbs in this game? Only two receptions to show for his limited effort.

The running game is still up in the air, for now at least. Although, the one big highlight in the game came when Armond Smith blew past the Lions defensive line and out ran the secondary for an 81 yard touchdown in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the big run was overshadowed by his two lost fumbles.

Preseason number two is done, two to go. These games are just a look-see experience and entertainment to pass the time until the regular season begins. The Browns have alot to sort out in these next to games, but I think that scenario will continue into the regular season. Hopefully, they will be able to get their act together before time has passed and everyone will be saying, "Where did the season go." Pittsburgh will be looking to repeat the humiliation they handed the Browns in their final outing last season. The Browns have plenty of time to prepare for those rival confrontation. It would be nice if those two games would be for division domination and the playoffs. Dreams can come true.    

Browns Beat Packers As NFL Preseason Gets Underway

A win is a win, but preseason is preseason. The Browns beat the Packers at Cleveland Browns Stadium by a score of 27-17. The high-powered first-string offense of the Packers made only a brief appearance in the first quarter, as would be expected in the first preseason game. While on the field, the Packer offense was outshined by the Browns offense led by the "quarterback controversy is over" Colt McCoy. The big question mark of the Browns offense, the wide receiver position, may have found the answer.

Shurmur and his West Coast offense made use of an asset that has been there all along at wide receiver. Joshua Cribbs hauled in a 27 yard TD pass from Colt McCoy in the beginning stages of the Packer game. This is something I have adamantly suggested year after year for the answer to incorporating a long ball threat into the offense, Joshua Cribbs at wide receiver. In the past, Cribbs has only been used sparingly in that position.

While it is good to have an excellent kick-punt returner who can give you good field position, which Cribbs has done, it is even more vital to have an offense that can consistently put the ball across the goal line. I look forward to seeing more of Cribbs running patterns and chasing down McCoy passes.

The season of NFL football is under way and the Browns are off to a positive start. Alot has to be answered before the Browns can say they are a legitimate contender. Colt McCoy has secured the quarterback position and is looking like the leader the offense needs. Everything else is a wait and see. Still, the Browns could very well surprise us this coming regular season, but then, any surprise in the positive direction is welcomed with open arms by fans who have been disappointed for too many years.

Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers Are Going To Dallas

Aaron Rodgers came out firing off completions and before the smoke could settle Green Bay was up 14-0. The Bears stalled the onslaught before it got out of hand, but when Cutler went out with a knee injury, so did all hope for a Bear recovery. So you would have thought. The Bears proceeded to play shuffle the quarterbacks after two near picks by Todd Collins, who was quickly replaced by Caleb Hanie-Who. The Bears defense hung tough while Hanie seemed to breathe some life back into the offense, until a devastating interception close to their goal line ended up in the end zone for a Packer score and seemed to knock the wind out of the Bears, temporarily. Hanie came back with a quick score to make it 21-14. With a little over two minutes to play and one last shot to tie it up, the Bear offense moved down the field to within striking distance, but it was a pick by Shields that ended the Bears season and a bid for a spot in the Superbowl.

Ben Roethlisberger and Rashard Mendenhall ran for touchdowns during the first two quarters against the Jets. Pittsburgh's defense dominated and delivered a devastating blow when Ike Taylor sacked Mark Sanchez, forcing a fumble that William Gay ran 22 yards for another score. Shaun Suisham added a field goal and at the half time it was 24-3. The second half saw a resurgence by the Jets, only bcause the Steeler's defense, who was basking in a comfortable lead, backed off and soften their coverage giving the Jets some breathing room to move the ball, which they took advantage of. Mark Sanchez hooked up with Santonio Holmes for a 45 yard score. The Jets made it even more interesting when they sacked Roethlisberger in the end zone. Four minutes later Jerricho Cotchery caught a pass for a 4 yard touchdown and it was 24-19. The tide of the game seemed to be shifting in the Jets favor, but the Steelers executed a couple of first downs on their final possession and the clock ran out on the Jets. The Piper got his payment.

Both games were eerily similiar. Both winning teams jumped out to an early lead. The winning teams both scored all their offensive points in the first half. Both winning team's quarterbacks did not throw for a touchdown, but each ran for a touchdown. Both winning team's quarterbacks threw two interceptions. Both winning team's defense scored a touchdown. Both losing teams scored all their touchdowns in the second half. I'm sure their are other similarities, but these stood out the most. I picked both the Packers and the Steelers to win. It will be a good Superbowl XLV.

There is talk Jay Cutler's injury wasn't severe enough for him to remove himself from the game. True, everyone was surprised when they saw Todd collins come out onto the field and Cutler standing on the sideline with a supposed knee injury. I can only speak from experience. I suffered a knee injury in a game that turned out to be a severely sprained ACL. When the injury first occurred I got up and tried to walk it out, flexing my knee and bending it. At first it looked as if it was only temporary, but as time passed it got stiffer and stiffer, until I couldn't even walk on it. I had to sit the rest of the game out. Later I found out it was an injury to the ACL. It would have been stupid for Cutler to continue playing, jeapordizing himself and his team. It was the right call.

Patriots Are Denied and Seahawks Are Sent Packin'

Number One New England Patriots mounted a second half surge, but were denied a trip to the AFC Championship by a stubborn NY Jets, who just won't go away. Tom Brady couldn't get into his usual rythmn due to an annoying Jets defense and was sacked five times plus hit another seven. Mark Sanchez didn't make any mistakes, which was necessary for the Jets to even have a chance in this one. The Jets running game was superior to the Patriots. All the way around the Patriots were out finessed by the Jets ending 28-21.

Tom Brady threw for more yardage than Sanchez. Brady accumulated more passing first downs with 19-8. Time of possession was as equally imbalanced, with the Patriots holding the ball almost ten minutes longer. Obviously Brady and company were not as productive with the ball. Brady threw for 299 yards, but had the one looming mistake in the beginning that set the tone. The Patriots even had more rushing first downs. Five different rushers combined for 113 yards. All-in-all just too many passes fell to the wayside.

The Jets made the most of the time they had the ball. Mark Sanchez had a 194 total passing yards with three touchdowns. He went 16-25. Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson combined for 119 yards of rushing with one touchdown each. Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards accounted for the other two reception touchdowns, but Jerico Cotchery was Sanchez main target hauling in 5 passes for 96 yards. Offensive job done. The Jets defense did their part in making sure the Patriots were miserable and frustrated. As already mentioned, they sacked Brady 5 times, 3 of them in the Patriots disastrous first half. Jets move on to play the Steelers in the AFC Championship.

Seattle made it fun and interesting, but you had to know it wasn't going to last. Jay Cutler was just too much for the Seattle defense to handle, who had a great game. He became the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for two touchdowns and run for two others in a playoff game. Seattle made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter to narrow the point difference, but it was not enough. Chicago won 35-24.

Jay Cutler passed and ran like a man on a mission. The mission was to win, and that is what he did. Cutler threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns. Greg Olsen made some big catches for him scoring one touchdown with 113 yards. The big one was a 58 yard touchdown on the Bears first possession. Chicago dominated the ground game with Matt Forte pounding out 80 yards. Chester Taylor ran for another 44 yards and Cutler scrambled for 43 yards. The Bears defense did their job keeping the Seahawks out of the end zone for three quarters. Bears move on to face the daunting Packers in the NFC Championship.

Seattle could not get anything going for three quarters, their guns were silent. If it wasn't for the fourth quarter there wouldn't be anything to talk about as far as Seattle's offense was concerned. You figure by then Chicago was in prevent mode being so far ahead with the score at 28-3. Matt Hasselbeck threw three touchdowns, all in fourth quarter. Mike williams caught two of the three in that last ditch effort-less ending. Brandon Stokely caught the third and through the game mounted 85 yards. That's pretty much it, the fairy tale season is over for the Seahawks.

Steelers Beat Ravens Again And Packers Were Near Flawless

All I got to say is, "Wow, what a football game." It was everything you expected out of a Steelers-Ravens game and more. It was a tale of two games. The first half looked as though Baltimore was going to run away with it. Baltimore's defense, Suggs in particular, brutalized Roethlisberger. It ended with the Ravens sporting a two touchdown lead. Then the second half started and from there it was all Pittsburgh in the third quarter, returning like for like on Flacco and capitalizing on Raven mistakes. They traded field goals and then it happened. A huge pass play put the Steelers in striking range and Mendenhall bullied his way for a touchdown and the lead. A personal foul gave the Ravens a ray of hope and the kick return went to mid-field. With a fourth down and the game on the line Houshmandzadeh couldn't put away a near perfect throw from Flacco. Both teams played their hearts out, but somebody had to lose and that somebody was Baltimore, again. Final tally was 31-24.

Ben Roethlisberger struggled, but got the job done in his usual fashion, hard-nose football. Roethlisberger accumulated 226 yards and two touchdowns. Rashard Mendenhall toughed out 46 yards on the ground and scored two hard fought touchdowns. Wallace and Ward saw very little in the way of big catches, but when it comes to Hines Ward you got to love the way he plays the game, full of enthusiam. He scored one touchdown. Brown and Sanders accounted for the bulk of reception yardage. Pittsburgh's defense kept the Steelers in the game and forced crucial game altering mistakes.

Joe Flacco gave it his best shot. You can't fault him. A potential touchdown pass was dropped at the goal line and a pivotal game saver was muffed at the end that could have put the Ravens in a position to put the game into overtime. He didn't put up big numbers and dropped passes were of no help. Rice was relatively controlled running for only 32 yards with an equal amount of reception yardage. Rice did score one touchdown. Heap topped the receivers with 43 tards and a score. So why was the game so close? It was defense. The Ravens defense had 6 sacks plus 8 hits on Roethlisberger. They scored on one of the strangest looking plays. With the ball laying on the ground after Roethlisberger was hit, everyone was standing around in a fog, until Redding smartly went over, picked it up, and trotted in for the score.

Atlanta and Green Bay were trading touchdown for touchdown to start and then all hell broke loose on Atlanta. Atlanta was making a bid on the goal line when a Matt Ryan attempt fell slightly short of its mark in the end zone and was picked off. The ball was now in the hands of Rodgers who methodically moved down the field for a touchdown. Some plays later, again Ryan was picked off by Tramon Williams, this time returned 70 yards for a score. That was half time and that was it. Green Bay never looked back. Rodgers and Company flat out dominated. Atlanta's misery ended at a 48-21 drubbing.

What can you say? "It's a beautiful day in the Atlantahood, it's a beautiful day in the Atlantahood. Would you be my neighbor?" Mr Aaron Rodgers and the Packers were anything but neighborly with the Falcons. Rodgers put in one of his best performances. He only missed on 5 passes out of 36 attempts. That is one of the best ratios I have ever seen. He threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns adding another on the ground. Four of his receivers had over 75 yards each with Greg Jennings topping out the group at 101 yards. The Packers defense forced four turnovers. Tramon Williams once again shined with two picks, taking one to the house.
 
Atlanta's numbers, well we just won't go there. Matt Ryan and Company were undoubtedly releived to see this one finally come to an end. The empty stadium with four minutes left was an eerie reminder of what just happened. Oh, one highlight worth mentioning was Eric Weems record setting kick off return of 102 yards for a touchdown.

Green Bay Sneaks Past Philadelphia And Baltimore Steamrolls Kansas City

The very first play of the Green Bay and Philadelphia game set the tone for its final outcome. From start to finish it was the defense of Green Bay that decided who would move on. It began with a sack and ended with an interception. One question lingers. Did Vick go for it all to soon with less than 40 seconds left? You can't falt him for trying to win, but once that ball is released there is no pulling it back. Tramon Williams made a good catch for an interception, game over, Packers win 21-16. Baltimore just plain set the tone in their confrontation with Kansas City. Once again it was defense, defense, and more defense. Kansa City turned the ball over five times as a result, three of them Matt Cassel interceptions. Flacco got the job done on offense. Baltimore wins persuasively 30-7.

Aaron Rodgers spread the ball around like cream cheese on a warm bagel. He made use of nine different receivers. Jones and Jennings were not his primary targets in this one, it was old veteran Donald Driver and a host of others. Rodgers only accumulated 180 total yards, but made good use of every yard, throwing for three touchdowns. Rookie James Starks ran for 123 yards to balance out the Packer's offensive attack. On the other side, Michael vick did plenty enough to win the game, throwing for a touchdown and running one in. Unfortunately, it was the one errant pass at the end that sealed the Eagles fate, coutesy the defense of the Packers.

Joe Flacco completed 25 passes out of 34 attempts. You would have to say that is a pretty good ratio. Todd Heap was his main target hauling in 10 of those passes for 108 yards. The two touchdowns Flacco threw went to Ray Rice and Anquan Boldin, who made an excellent catch in the middle end zone. Rice and McGahee shared the running assigments combining for 101 yards. McGahee's longest was a 25 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, putting an exclamation point on the game. Matt Cassel took it one the chin and just about everywhere else on his body. He was stung for three picks and sacked three times. Jamaal Charles scored the Chiefs only touchdown and that is pretty much it. It was all Baltimore defense.

Green Bay moves on to play Atlanta. They met once in the regular season where the Falcons won in a close game. They will faceoff on Saturday at 8:00 PM. Don't miss this one. Anytime Baltimore and Pittsburgh get together it's going to be a headbanger. Division rivals who ended the regular season with the same win-loss record and Baltimore has a score to settle. Each of their previous confrontations were low scoring and decided by three points. I hope their is plenty of snow on Saturday at 4:30 PM. It would make it all the more interesting. Football and the elements, good old fashion fun the way it was meant to be.

History In The Making-Seahawks Win Big And Colts Just Lose

It was a great start to the Wild and Wooly-Card Weekend. The 7-9 Seattle Seahawks rocked the football world by taking out the New Orlean Saints 41-36. The Seahawks defied all logic. They not only won, but did it convincingly. If that wasn't enough irony, Peyton Manning stood helplessly on the sidelines as the Jets methodically moved down the field in the closing minute. The camera honed in on Manning and then the field of play where Edwards made a sensational catch to seal the Colts fate. All that was left to do was for Nick Folk to put it through the uprights for a 17-16 win, which he did with no time on the clock.

The Seahawks are changing the record books and making history. I guess the statement, "It's tough for a visiting team to win at Qwest Field," is true. Matt Hasselbeck outmatched Drew Brees with four touchdown passes to one and he did it with almost half the attempts. Brees threw the ball sixty times in desparation to Hasselbeck's thirty-five. It was one of Hasselbeck's best performances. Marshall Lynch was held to 55 yds of running going into the fourth quarter and then it happened. Lynch broke free for a 67 yard scamper and his only touchdown of the day. The video will be watched time and time again by Seahawk fans for days to come. He ended up with a total of 131 yards for the day. Seattle's tightend, John Carlson, had only three catches, but two of them were for pay dirt. Stokely and Williams accumulated most of the reception yardage and each had a touchdown.

You could see the agony on Peyton Manning's face after the game ended with the Colts on the short end of the stick. Manning is a true competitor, who doesn't like to accept anything short of perfection. There isn't much offense to talk about in this one. Manning had a decent game, although not one you would usually expect when Manning takes the field. He was 18-26 totaling 225 yards and only one touchdown toss. The rest of the Colts points came on Adam Vinatieri field goals. The offensive highlights came late in the game after the Colts took a two-point advantage. Antonio Cromartie returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards. The ball was now in the hands of Mark Sanchez. He completed four passes to bring the Jets into Folk's range, but that was not enough. A final pass went in the direction of Braylon Edwards, an ex-Cleveland Brown, going down the right side, who adjusted his stride and leaped into the air to make a spectacular catch. From there it was easy for Folk to put it through the uprights with no time left. Jets win, Colts lose.

Well, that's two picks wrong so far. I wrote in my previous article, "If the Seahawks win, I am taking them to go to the Superbowl." Looks like I am locked in on this one. If the Seahawks play like they did against the Saints, there is no stopping them. Although, the next game won't be at Qwest Field. As for the Jets, I still don't know what to make of them. They will face ex-Cleveland Browns coach Bill Belichick's Patriots next.

Steelers Steal the Show At Cleveland Browns Stadium-Obliterate Browns 41-9

When Roethlisberger hooked up with Mike Wallace for a 56 yard touchdown on their very first play on offense, it was all over. Did you expect it to end any differently? The Steelers just flat out annihilated the Browns. Before the pizza was done and you could pop the tab on another beer it was 31-3. If Roethlisberger would have played a full second half, the final score could have ended much worse than 41-9. By then a fair number of fans had long left the house, except for the yellow and black jerseys. The Steelers took the division and the No. 2 Seed position with a bye going into this week.

Colt McCoy had to feel like he was hit by a freight train. Sacked four times and picked off three times, it was his worse outing of his short season. He completed 20 passes out of 41 attempts for a total of 209 yards. McCoy did have more rushing yards than his partner Peyton Hillis, but that is nothing to brag on. Hillis could only eek out a total of 13 yards on 6 carries. Mike Bell accounted for another 14 yards on 5 carries. That's pretty much it with the offense, a total of 225 yards. Joshua cribbs was for the most part missing from the action. Certainly not the way Dawson wanted to make his exit seeing it was his last game as a Brown.

On the otherhand, the Steelers came out firing. The Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Wallace tandem is a deadly combination going into the playoffs and their next opponents will have to reckon with it. Wallace accumulated 105 yards in receptions, a 56 yard catch for a touchdown was the highlight. Roethlisberger spread the wealth around to his receivers very effectively while he was on the field completing 15 passes for 280 yards. Rashard Mendenhall didn't have a major impact with 36 yards on 14 carries, but still accounted for two of the Steelers four touchdowns.

The Browns ended the season with alot of questions lingering. More than likely Man-Hougini will not return. The offense still lacks the ability to go vertical with a quick strike potential. The running game literally lost its steam. The missing-from-the-offense Joshua Cribbs remains a mystery. Who will be their next place kicker? Finally and not least of all, when will the Browns finally put it all together and set a winner on the field once again? Should I dare say it? The two words Brown's fans have pinned all their hopes on losing year after losing year? Okay, I will say it, "Next year." Let's enjoy the playoffs in the mean time.

No Offense, No Surprise-Browns Get Trashed By Ravens 20-10

This season is looking all to familiar once again as the Browns continue their losing ways in a sad but not surprising loss to Baltimore. The trash talking Ravens pretty much had their own way on both sides of the ball. The final statistics verify that final and concise summary. Delhomme or McCoy, the outcome is all the same. The illusion of capable passing or running was not discernable. The unexplainable case of the disappearing Joshua Cribbs from the offense still remains unsolved. Man-Hougini dug down deep into his nearly empty bag of tricks for a brief moment to dazzle the home town fans one final time with a Massaquoi to Robiskie touchdown surprise. A precursor to his up coming concluding curtain call and escape.

Colt Mccoy showed up with no bullets in his gun and threw three interceptions. He accumilated only 149 yds from 15 completions out of 29 attempts. It all added up to a rating of 27.0. Definately not something you would write home about. Peyton Hillis didn't fair much better. He only had 35 yds on 12 carries. Hillis was used sparingly, touching the ball a total of 12 times running and only one reception. A far cry from previous games where he was the go to guy. All-in-all it added up to very little offense when considering possession time was almost split evenly between both teams.

Obviously Baltimore made better use of its time. The Ravens pounded out the majority of its offensive yards on the ground. Ray Rice ran for 92 yds on 25 carries. McGahee, Mclain, and Flacco added another 69 yds for a total of 161. Joe Flacco threw two touchdowns on a scant 102 yds of passing, but the glory goes to the trash talking defense led by Ray Lewis. In the days leading up to the game they taunted the Browns and scoffed that Hillis would not repeat his 144-yard performance against them in Week 3. The Browns failed at proving their taunts to be nothing but hot air. Ed Reed burned McCoy twice and delivered some of the games hardest hits.

It doesn't get any easier as the Browns close out their season against Pittsburgh, another defensively hard hitting team. What almost looked like a promising year turned out to be no different than all the rest. More than likely the Browns will finish 5-11. Joshua Cribbs remains a mystery. Man-Hougini continues to leave him out of the offensive scheme. Hopefully Man-Hougini will go out swinging with everything he's got. A win against the Steelers would give the fans some gratification and 6-10 looks better than 5-11. A parting gift perhaps before he makes his escape from the shackles of mediocrity called the Cleveland Browns. Next year things will be different. It will be a breakout year for the Browns, and there's this property along the the shores of Lake Erie near the Cuyahoga River I would like to sell you. A fantastic deal you cannot pass up.

Browns Run Short On Time And Lose To Bengals 19-17

Colt McCoy took the snaps, but the results were the same, another disappointing loss. Peyton Hillis was pretty much a non-factor running and totally missing from the passing game, which was a change from previous outings. The Bobbling Bengals, who looked terrible on defense, pelted the Browns with field goals. Cedric Benson went on a rampage while Carson Palmer sputtered. There were no turnovers by either team. The difference was the Browns total inability to convert 3rd down attempts and maintain possession. The Bengals controlled the clock with over 38 minutes of possession time.

Colt McCoy ended the game with a rating of 132.6. He completed 19 out of 25 passes and threw two touchdowns. The first touchdown started with one of the strangest looking line formations ever seen, which was probably why the Bengals defense was so baffled, they didn't know what to make of it. It would have been an opportune time to blitz McCoy with only three line men to protect him, but they didn't. The Bengals spread themselves out and McCoy put in the air to Robert Royal, who made a great catch in the end zone. The second was to Brian Robiskie late in the game, but too little too late. Phil Dawson added the other 5 points with only one field goal. Ben Watson was the go-to-guy with 7 receptions for 92 yards.

The big scorer for Cincinnati was Clint Stitser. He completed four field goals. Cedric Benson compiled 150 yards on the ground and scored the Bengals only touchdown. Palmer was so-so with 209 yards on 14 completions out of 23 attempts. No-Show-Cinco didn't have an impact and No-show-Wens left the game limping. Despite all of this, the Bengals controlled the clock and the game for the win.

The Browns were showing so much promise after beating the Saints and the Patriots. The hometown fans finally had something to cheer about. There was even talk of a possible playoff spot. The Browns then lost two tough games against the Jets and the Jaguars, won two more against the Panthers and the Dophins. Well, you know the history, no sense in repeating it. Through all of this, Joshua Cribbs remains a mystery. Is it his injury that has limited him or is it Mangini? The long ball had been missing and finally emerged in today's game a couple of times, if you can call the Royal and Robiskie catchs a long pass. The final games against the Ravens and the Steelers will be the toughest games of the year. Browns, make us believers again.

The Curious Case Of An Inept Cleveland Browns-Lose to Buffalo 13-6

The weather wasn't as bad as expected, but the Browns were worse. Still in the hunt for a playoff spot, although remote, Cleveland played their most disappointing game of the season. They were riddled with inept ball handling and presented a subpar second half offense. The game was never for the Browns out of reach of winning, but the goal line was out of reach, not even scoring one time. Late in the fourth quarter Mohamed Massaquoi was wide open going down the right side, but a break down in the protection of Delhomme caused his pass to fall short and it was intercepted, thus thwarting what could have tied the game. End of game, end of story.

Peyton Hillis figured to be dominant in this game. Hillis did have a hundred yard effort running for 108 yards. His efforts were overshadowed by three fumbles, one of which occurred at a key moment shortly after Buffalo turned over the ball with a mistake of their own on their end of the field in the first quarter. Jake Delhomme only had a total of 86 yards of passing and threw one interception with no touchdowns. Hillis seemed to be his primary target again and Watson only caught one pass through the whole game. Jake only averaged a little over 4 yards per completion and compiled only two first downs passing. That pretty much sums it up as to what went wrong, no offense. Defensively the Browns hung in there and provided a gift for the offense, a gift they squandered. The gift was a Fiztpatrick fumble caused by a Chris Gocong sack that put the ball on the 25 yard line of the Bills. Hillis returned the gift on the very next play. Thanks but no thanks.

The Bills offense could only muster up one touchdown, but that is all they needed. Fred jackson had a good day running with 112 yards. Ryan Fitzpatrick spread 142 yards between 7 receivers. David Nelson caught an 11 yarder for the only score for the Bills. Ryan Lindell kicked two field goals to account for the other 6 points. The Bills were happy to get this win when considering all the close games that haven't gone their way all season long.

Joshua Cribbs was again unexplainably missing from the offensive scheme, not even used to return kickoffs. He was thrown to only once and ran the ball once, which almost ended disastrously. The Browns have been sidelining a key element in Joshua Cribbs. The Browns are lacking the long ball threat where Cribbs could be used and have abandoned something that worked quite well last year, the wildcat offense. I am not saying Mangini should rely on the wildcat, but he should be incorporating it at key moments. I am not saying Mangini should be going long all the time, but at least do something the opponents aren't expecting because judging by past performances, they certainly don't expect the Browns to go vertical. Mangini needs to unleash the offense or maybe he lacks confidence in his own offenses capabilities. You have to do what you have to do to win, or has he given up on this season?

Miami Singing The Blues After Cleveland Browns Last Minute Takeaway 13-10

The Browns struggled their way to a victory in the closing minute of the game against mistake riddled Miami. All the mistakes for Miami came from Chad Henne throwing three interceptions. You would like to say it was great defense on the part of the Browns, but the truth of the matter was the Dolphins inept offense led by Henne. Still, the opportunities presented themselves and the Browns accepted the gifts courtesy Henne. The last one caught by Browns' Mike Adams led to Dawson's winning kick.

Peyton Hillis pounded out 57 yards on the ground and caught 7 passes for 22 yards, not his usual output. Jake Delhomme managed to avoid the usual mistake and threw for 217 yards and 1 touchdown. Ben Watson was the offensive standout with 10 receptions for 100 yards and the recipient of the Delhomme touchdown pass. Mohamed Massaquoi pulled in 4 passes for 81 yards, a decent showing. The offense got the job done even though their third down efficiency was terrible at 2-14.

The Browns' defense only had one sack through the whole game and 2 hits. Adams, Elam, and Haden each had a pick. Aside from that, there was alot of punting from both sides, which gives you the idea that offense was lacking, especially when it came to 3rd down conversions. Miami's only bright spot, if you want to call it that, was their running game, and that wasn't enough to eliminate the Miami fans disgust, which they vocalized frequently through the game.

The Browns have won two in a row and four of their last six games. They are now 5-7. They can realistically win their next two games, but the final two of the season will be against Baltimore and then Pittsburgh. Those games will be nasty to say the least. Baltimore and Pittsburgh both have punishing defenses. Will Jake be ready for that conflagration? He could be, with the help of Peyton Hillis and Ben Watson.

It may be time for Mangini to call out the wildcat offense or think about airing it out once in awhile, something that has been lacking in the offense. Also, Joshua Cribbs is still missing from the offensive scheme and that is somewhat perplexing. Is it because of his injury or is it because Mangini just isn't playing him? If Mangini wants to beat the Ravens and Steelers, Cribbs would be a key ingredient. Wouldn't that be something, to win their final four games and end with a record of 9-7? Enough to be in the playoffs in some divisions. Mangini, if you make that happen, that would be a Super Bowl season in my books.
